TPS7A66-Q1: TPS7A66-Q1 Issue

Part Number: TPS7A66-Q1

Hi Team,

My customer is using TPS7A6650-Q1 to generate supply voltage (5V) for the microcontroller.

Can you please tell me if there is any possibility of output exceeding 5V +/-2% specification mentioned in the datasheet?

Please note that I am not talking about transients due to line response and load response.

My concern is due to some failures inside TPS7A6650 , steady state output voltage exceeding 5.5V and damaging the microcontroller.

  • Hi Larry,

For the fixed 5V version you are correct, +/- 2% is the maximum tolerance this device will see, not including transients due to line and load response.

For an adjustable version it may be larger due to the tolerance of the external feedback resistors.

    Thanks,

    - Stephen

  • Hello Stephen,

    Thanks for your response.

But my concern is about random hardware failure inside the regulator.

For example  ,if there is any random failure resulting in short of pass element between Vin and Vout , then output voltage will foloow input voltage without any regulation.

So in this case if supply voltage (Vin) is 6V , then output voltage (Vout) will also be 6V right?

This will damage peripherals connected to regulator.

So I would like to know if this scenario is possible?

or do we have any protection features inside regulator?

    Waiting for your reply.

    Thanks

  • Hello Stephen,

Can you please take a look into the above question?

    Thanks and Regards,

    Abhishek

  • Hello Abhishek,

Some modern linear regulators have an active pulldown circuit on the output to aid in reducing the overshoot of Vout during startup or transient events.
This would be the kind of thing I would look for in a linear regulator to be damaged under these conditions.
This feature is not in the TPS7A66.  So in the event that Vout is shorted to Vin, the linear regulator should survive but it will not be able to regulate the output voltage.

    Thanks,
