LM5170-Q1: Common mode choke after the converter inductor query

Part Number: LM5170-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDA-01168

My client wishes to place a common mode choke in the location shown below from the TIDA-01168 reference design. If they were to add more ceramic capacitors before and after the common mode choke, can you foresee any problems with this strategy. The converter is 4-phase and they wish to place 4 common mode chokes in these locations.

  • Hi Ponsonby,

Thank you for posting. It shouldn't be a problem.  I would place more capacitors in front of the common mode choke than after.  I would also reserve a bulk capacitor position like the electrolytic for damping of the resonant tank formed by the inductors and the ceramic capacitors.

    Thanks,

    Youhao Xi, Applications Engineering.
