Evaluation module BQ20z95EVM-001 could not establish communication with bqEASY Software.

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQEVSW

Hi,

We got BQ20z95EVM-001 evaluation module. As suggested in Quick start Guide SLUA-421A ,We connected 4-resistors across 4P and 1N pins. we applied power across pack+ and pack- pins to start the bq20z95 gauging. When we connected the evaluation module to PC,It is showing that communication cannot be established. The below link is the snapshot of the bqEVSW. So,consider the problem and try solve it.

  • Hello,

Did you have any issues with the EV2300 driver installation?

Do you see the bq80xx driver loaded in the lower right hand corner (see attached image)?

What voltage are you applying to the resistors?

What happens if you ignore all the warnings.  When you get to SBS screen, can you press the "refresh" button and see some communication with the gauge?

    Best regards, Keith

  • Hi,

We had no problem in installing EV2300 drivers.

We have applied a voltage of 16v across 4-resistors of 470 ohms.

We ignoed all warnings and get to SBS screen and pressed the "refresh" button. Still, we were unable to establish the communication.

At very first time, when we connected the evaluation module to PC communication was established. We were able to export .gg files also.

At that point of time, we updated the firmware in the srec programming screen in Pro screen. Do this updating of firmware erases any information in the evaluation module? What is .senc file ?

    Best regards,

    Raghu

  • Hi Raghu,

Now that you tell me about the firmware update, what I think happened is this:

when you reprogram the firmware you need to:

    1. in "PRO" screen put the gas gauge into ROM mode by writing SMB Command "00" Word "0F00".
    2. reprogram the gauge with appropriate .SENC file
    3. Then you will get a warning to close EVsoftware >>>>  BUT before you do..... you need to send SMB Command "08".  Simply press the Send button in image shown below.
    4. close evSoftware and reopen (so new dataflash parameters will load based on your .SENC file programmed)

It's not too late.  All you need to do is open EVsoftware ... ignore all the warnings ... get to the PRO screen ... and send the "08" SMB command.

I hope this solves your problem.  Best regards, Keith

  • Hi sir,

    We have followed your instructions.

It is working now.Thank you for your support.

    Raghu

  • Hi,

The communication has been established. After configuring all data flash parameters, when we were charging our battery pack at 95% of Relative SOC the DFETF and CFETF flags in PF status were raised.

Does this mean the FETs failed permanently in the module? Do we have to replace them?

Without help of these FET can we directly connect the load across the 4P and 1N pins of BQ20z95EVM-001 Evaluation module, to complete the discharging cycle?

    please consider this problem.

  • Hello,

The procedure for clearing a permanent failure is included in the Quick Start Guide for bq20zXX Family Gas Gauges: http://www.ti.com/litv/pdf/slua421a  (section 8.2, page 15).

The gauge must be unsealed and the failure must be removed.

    Best regards, Keith
