BQ24259: Behavior with depleted battery

Part Number: BQ24259

Client wants to know how the part responds if his product is connected to external charger when battery is depleted, after long storage time.

I infer from the data sheet that if the battery open circuit voltage is less than 2.2 V, the part attempts to initiate a charge at 100 mA max, then in response to rising cell voltage, switches to constant voltage charge, completing charge in normal manner.

Is that correct?  Client is very concerned about products stored for long periods of time with Li polymer battery installed.  Any information is appreciated.

  • Hi Michael,

You are correct. If the BAT voltage is less than 2.2V, the part thinks there is a battery short, applies a 100mA short circuit current until the BAT pin voltage rises and then increases to the precharge current level.  After precharge, the charger moves to constant fast charge and finally constant voltage.
