Hello,

I'm using a BQ34Z100-G1 and a microcontroller to monitor a NiMH battery.

I'm now testing the recovery mechanism. I'm using an analog switch (STG719) to route P4 to P1 or to the I2C line and a 3.6V voltage regulator with enable (TPS70936) to be able to control the recovery mechanism with the microcontroller.

1) If the BQ is working well can i switch to ROM mode using the recovery mechanism?

2) Trying to switch to ROM mode with the recovery and watching the I2C bus with a logic analyzer i've noticed that the BQ reply to the ROM mode address only sometimes, and when ti reply i can be able to send only some bytes befor reciving a NAK and lose connection with it. Is this a correct behaviour? Have i to send some specific command to keep it in ROM mode?

Here there is a screenshot of the logic analyzer, this happend about 250ms after power up.

I'm trying to send 0x00 0x0D 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 that is the first packet sent after switch to ROM mode during programming, but like in the screenshot the BQ send me a NAK and after i can't send it other data.

I know how to program the BQ while in ROM mode but i need to know what i've to send to keep it in this mode after a fail-safe method.

TI doesn't document ROM mode. ROM mode is intended only for TI tools to program the gauge. Is there anything particular that isn't supported by bqStudio that you want to do in ROM mode?

I'm using the BQ in an embedded board connected only to a microcontroller, i can't use bqStudio, i need to know what i've to do to recover the bq when it's bricked using the fail-safe procedure.

If the gauge is bricked in your system and the recommendations from this thread did not fix it then you will have to replace the gauge.

Hi, in this thread https://e2e.ti.com/support/power-management/f/196/t/893972 you told us that connecting P1 and P4 during power cycle the bq should respond on 0x16, but why it don't do this? Replacing the guauge will cost a lot, it will be a lot better have a procedure to try to recover the gauge before replacing it.

At this point, the best way is to replace the gauge IC.
