UCC28634: More primary inductance than required

Part Number: UCC28634
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC28701

The datasheet says the operating mode should be DCM in te 0..100% load range and CCM reserved for overload conditions. Why is that? In my case the inductance calculated by Webench is 552uH, but the core allows me to get 682uH at the rated saturation current. What would happen if I select the bigger inductance? The obvious generic answer would be "the controller would enter CCM earlier", but to my understanding it appears the datasheet does not like this option (figure 41 and the related discussion in 8.3.21). The higher inductance would relax the constraints of R_cs/L_pri in inequality (16), section 8.3.7, so it looks beneficial.

  • Hello,

The UCC28634 will go CCM during large signal transients only.  The rest of the time the converter is operating in DCM.

The CCM and DCM operation are defined in section 13 of the data sheet.

If you would like a flyback controller that operates purely in DCM,  You could look at the UCC28701 which never operates in CCM.

    Regards,
