LM317A: LM317AMDTX/NOPB Device Operate Limit

Part Number: LM317A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS7A47

Hi,

TI Support Team,

Device Link "https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/texas-instruments/LM317AMDTX-NOPB/LM317AMDTX-NOPBCT-ND/3440163"

I Have used LM317AMDTX/NOPB Part in one of the my project.

in that i have to plan board is work with input range of 4.5V to 24V.

4.5V is my minimum Input and 24V is maximum input.

required current is near about 800ma-1000ma

is above part work with 4.5V input and at output of 3.3V @ 1A?

if i am not able to use same part number please suggest some other part number with same Size of DPAK.
so i can use alternate part number in my design

Please suggest,

Hoping for quick resolution.

Thanks & regards,

Chand Padaliya

  • Hi Chand,

The LM317A has a Darlington output so the drop-out is roughly fixed at ~1.4V.  So the minimum voltage to regulate VOUT is ~3.3+1.4 or 4.7. That being said, the datasheet electrical characteristics are shown with VIN=VOUT+3V. This is mainly to highlight the minimum operating voltage of VREF+3V. or 4.25V.

While not in the Dpak package, the TPS7A47 is capable of operating with 4.5Vin and 3.3VOUT.

Both devices would thermally shutdown if VIN=24V and VOUT=3.3V at 1A.

I hope this helps to answer your question?
