BQ25505: Solar panel and Power PATH for other power source?

Part Number: BQ25505
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25570

Team,

The idea is to use the BQ25505 for harvesting from the IXYS KXOB25-02X8F solar panel.
However a 2nd power path is needed as the power could come from a second source.

1)Do we have an equivalent BQ25505 / BQ25570 that could manage a 2nd power PATH (like coming wireless charging or other)?
-If not do we have some discrete power path examples or TI design for such use case?

2)An other option is to use BQ25505 just as harvestor (BOOST and BUCK) and use external ORing to a 2nd power source that then connect to a charger.
It seems that fig 28 page 25 of the datasheet SLUSBJ3F does suggest it is possible.
Do we have have some TI designs that would show this scenario with a 5V output?

Thanks in advance,

A.

  • Hi A,

Regarding 1, there are no dual input equivalent ICs to the BQ255XX devices. You can parallel a second charger and connect its battery output pin to the VBAT_SEC pin of the BQ255XX device.  We do not have any reference designs of this configuration.

Regarding 2, figure 28 shows a buck converter connected to the VSTOR output of the charger.  The output voltage will be lower than the VSTOR=VBAT_SEC voltage.

Can you provide me more info of your requirements?

Storage element type, charge voltage, max charge current

Second power source max voltage and current

Output power rails needed (5V, ?A, etc)

From that I can help you develop a reference design.

    Regards,

    Jeff
