LM5069: Use upstream?

Part Number: LM5069

Can the LM5069 be used upstream of the plugged-in board? All the examples I see use it at the immediate entry of the PCBA plugged into a live backplane. Can the LM5069 be used on the backplane, to allow hot swapping of downstream connections?

  • Hi,

What is your downstream circuit consists of - is it a DC-DC converter ? How much is the input capacitance of your downstream circuit ?

LM5069 can be used on the backplane as well. However, hot-plugging a downstream with a large capacitance could cause circuit-breaker event due to capacitor inrush currents and restarting the LM5069 output.

    Best Regards, Rakesh

  • Thanks for the quick response. I'm designing a power distribution box for many of these downstream loads. I'm not completely sure what each downstream circuit is, as they are off the shelf systems consisting of a motor and resistive load. Probably a reasonable assumption that there is some bulk input capacitance. In addition, it is connected via ~2+ meter cables which will add cable capacitance.

I think you're right that the potential CB event might be too difficult to manage.
