LM5170-Q1: Part to part variations causing battery charging issue

Part Number: LM5170-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5170

Good afternoon,

We are using LM5170 for our bidirectional charger and we are experiencing what we believe as part to part variation issue with the LM5170.

To further explain the problem here is what we have:

1. Use LM5170 with 48V high side and 16.5V low side (to charge a Li-ion battery).

2. We notice that our end products (let's call it a bidirectional charger) from the same design behave differently in term of charging the batteries, for example one product will charge the battery until full while the other will not (stops charging around 80% capacity or above).

3. Let's call charger A for the one that charges battery until full and charger B for the one that will not.

4. Upon physically removing the LM5170 from charger A and put it on charger B makes charger B works as intended and charge the battery until 100% capacity.

5. This happens on several charges from the same product line.

6. This leads us to believe that there is an inherent part to part variation inside the LM5170 that causes this issue. As an additional information, the bidirectional charger works as intended when it is operating in boost mode, we do not see any issue happening in this mode.

Please advise. Thank you.
