Laser Driver

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS54201, TPS54200

Hi,

I am looking to build a programmable single laser drive. I need a variable output current between 50mA and 400mA to change the laser output power intensity programmatically. I would prefer Analog dimming over PWM dimming because the laser output is used for imaging a surface with a 100fps camera. (I would think PWM dimming would work at high frequecy(100kHz+) for the use case though with a MOSFET drive, But suggestions are welcome). Laser forward voltage will be around 2V. Input can give 5V, 2A. Its a price sensitive part so ideally would like to optimise for price as well.

Is there a single TI part I can look into for this specific application?

Thanking you in advance.

  • Hi Amal,

I think our TPS54201 with Analog dimming mode that would be a good solution for this application.

  • Dear Sean,

Thanks for the suggestion. I think TPS54200 will statisfy my requirement.

I was going through the datasheet and application note . One thing I am not able to figure out was the fact that Analog and PWM Dimming Modes in the IC are getting set on the startup VIN(based on my understanding). Would I be able to pull the PWM pin low(and make the laser turn OFF) in the beginning and feed the PWM signal as an when needed to make it lock into Analog PWM mode any time as desired?

I think this should be doable. I am just asking for double checking my view.

  • Hi Sir,

Yes, your understanding is right, you can pull down the "CTRL" pin to the low level and apply the PWM signal when it startup.
