BQ2980: UVP for Lipo battery

Hello.

We at the company are developing a new device with a lipo battery.
the circuit board is very small and when searching for a chip to protect the battery from discharging below normal, we found your chip.
The BQ298010 chip has a UVP level of 2.9V.
On the Internet, I see a lot of information that it is not recommended to discharge a lipo battery below 3V.
In this regard, I have a question: can I use your chip to protect the battery?
to info: we are counting on many pcs, about 10,000. therefore, to make a mistake in choosing a chip will be very expensive for us.
please help clarify this question!

Hi Sergey,

I agree that 3V is often recommended for lipo batteries. The BQ2980 can support a 3V UVP but that we have not released a 3V version there are no plans to for the time being. The closest we have available is the 2.9V option.

the chip has a BAT pin, which is connected to the battery to control its voltage.
Is it possible to connect this pin through a resistive divider, thus shifting the UVP threshold?

Hi Sergej,

I'm not sure that will be a good idea. There will be a constant current through the resistor divider which will slowly drain the battery and the resistor divider would need to be very accurate to maintain the accuracy of the BQ2980. This would also change the value of the OVP. There are recovery conditions that monitor the different between the PACK voltage and BAT voltage as well, so this may cause other problems.

have TI IC with UVP > 3V (3.27V, 3.3V or similar) and small case (1.5 x 1.5mm or 2 x 2mm)?

and how much minimum order quantity and price?

Hi Sergej,

Unfortunately, TI does not have a protector IC with UVP > 3V for single-cell. For multi-cell, there may be some options like the BQ2962.

another question: can you make the same IC for us, but with UVP = 3.27V, and what should be a minimum order so that it would be profitable for you to do this?

The maximum UVP that can be programmed to this IC is 3.0V.
