UCC28742: High MOSFET frequency for a planar transformer in a SMPS converter

Part Number: UCC28742
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC28780,

I found two planar transformers that I want to use in an ac-dc converter.

750341145 and MTPL-2516.

Universal input: 90-265 Vrms AC

Output: 12VDC, 1A

Primary winding of transformers will see bridge rectified pulse DC.

UCC28742 can drive MOSFET switching at maximum 105Khz. Similar case with UCC28740DR which is what WEbench tool suggests when I try to simulate a necessary circuit. Webench doesn't account for a planar transformer, which may require higher than 200Khz of frequency.

Does it mean I have to use an SMPS controller such as UCC28780? The latter requires complex circuits, whilst I want small & simple schematics, such as the one that's offered by UCC28742.

  • Hello,

The UCC28742 maximum switching frequency is 80 kHz.  If you are trying to design a DCM flyback for 200 kHz you could try using the UCC28780 in an active clamp flyback.  Their is not a webench design tool for this device.  However, there is an excel design calculator that you can find at the following link.

If you decide to move forwarded with the UCC28780 and have questions about it.   Please repost the inquire in the e2e with UCC28780 in the title.

    Regards,
