UCC28740: Is it possible to use for forward topology

Part Number: UCC28740

Dear Speciacists,

My customer is considering UCC28740 and has a question.

I would be grateful if you could advise.

---

According to the UCC28740 datasheet, Flyback is mentioned.

Is it possible to use for forward topology.

If not, could you please let me know why.

---

I appreciate your great help.

Best regards,

Shinichi

  • Hello Shinichi-san,

Thank you for your interest in the UCC28740 flyback controller.

This controller is designed specifically for DCM flyback applications.  Forward mode operation is largely in CCM, although it is possible to operate in DCM.  However, the UCC28740 uses peak current mode control and does not have slope compensation to allow >50% duty-cycles without subharmonic oscillation.  Furthermore, the gate-drive is designed with low on-drive current because high peak current is not necessary for primary current that starts at 0A with limited slope. Adding external circuits to mitigate these issues for forward mode introduce complication and cost that make the UCC28740 unattractive compared to other controllers that are already designed for forward-mode operation.

Please check this TI  website page for options to fit your needs:

  • Hi Ulrich,

    Thank you for your reply.

I understande UCC28740 is not recommended for forward.

    I appreciate your great help.

    Best regards,

    Shinichi
