BQ76930: REGIN'S Step Down FET Damage

Part Number: BQ76930
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ76940,

I see the bq76930 demo, the REGIN PIN use a external FET. The G pole of FET is connected to the fifth battery. The actual voltage of the fifth battery can be up to 25V. The maximum voltage of FET GS is 20V.Will this application cause damage to the FET?I've seen BQ76940, and I've seen cascading applications of BQ76930, and that's what they did.

Is this usage wrong?

If there are risks, how do You use REGIN's Step Down FET?

  • Hi User,

The connection is a source-follower circuit or common drain amplifier, consult your favorite electronics reference for more information on its operation. The circuit is generally fine, if needed for your situation you can add a zener across the gate-source, it should never conduct except in the case of a severe transient where you are concerned.
