TPS23861: Behavior on short circuit occurs between VPWR and DRAIN, when NOT detected PD.

Part Number: TPS23861

Hi,

My customer is asking the following:  Please let us know.

When the PSE device has not detected PD yet, I think that it searches the PD by outputting a pulse waveform of 23V → 0V between VPWR and DRAIN.
Is it correct to understand that "if a short circuit occurs between VPWR and DRAIN at that time, the DRAIN pin is in HiZ and almost no current flows" ?

Thanks and best regards,
M.HATTORI.

  • Hi Hattori-san,

That is correct, I tested it in lab. There is no current that flows under this condition. In addition, the PSE wouldn't try to power the port since the detection resistance would be considered "LOW". If the end user forces the port on (through software in manual mode), the PSE has inrush protection and current limit protection. Thanks!
