Unable to establish a connection between BQ78PL114EVM and BQWizard

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQWIZARD

Hi,

I'm working on the BQ78PL114EVM right now. Currently I have the BATT terminals connected to the resistive cell simulator as indicated in the user's guide. The PACK terminals are connected to a power supply. I have installed the USB-TO-GPIO Firmware Loader.exe. I am experiencing problems interfacing the hardware with bqWizard. Whenever I try to start bqWiqard, it gives me error messages:  "Unable to connect to the device" and "LAN is not bulit!". Can I get some help on this? Thank you.

Regards,

Noreen Wong

  • You mentioned that the power supply is connected to the PACK terminals.  The power supply that sources current to the 10 ohm resistors that are simulating cells should be connected to BATT- and BATT+, not PACK+ and PACK-.

The Powersupply and the 10 resistors simulate a battery.  They should be connected as such.  Only connect a load to PACK+/- when using a simulated battery.

  • Hi Jim,

Thanks for your help. The communication error is gone with your advice on the setup.

I have another question about the setup. I have connected 28V to BATT-/+ with the 10 ohm resistors cell simulator. I want to connect a controllable load as you mentioned in PACK +/-. However, when I measure the voltage across these terminals (PACK+/-), I do not get any voltage (0.025V). Is this as expected?

    Thanks again,

    Noreen Wong

  • Read document SLUU330b about the Algorithm Enable Register.  Plus, make sure there are no safety rules violations present that would be holding the MOSFETs off.

  • I checked the Algorithm Enable Register and it seemed that it has been set to the default value. Also, I believe that I haven't violated any safety rules either.

What I noticed is that with only the cell simulator plus the controllable load, I would notice the supply voltage on the PACK+/- terminals, but as soon as I activate bqWizard or leave the board sitting for a longer awhile there would be no voltage.

Can I get further help on this matter? Thank you.

  • Default setting for the Algorithm Enable Register is to disable safety rules and turn all of the FETs off.  Clear the bit labeled Inhibit Safety Rules and see what happens.
