BQ24170: Input 13.2V/9A , output 12.6V/1.8A

Part Number: BQ24170

Hi TI team:

Current we met bq24170 device body was burned out. the failed rated is about 30%.

Inputting voltage DC 13.2V/9A, then output 12.6V/1.8A.

When battery was inserted into the host system, did through burn-in test. Do you have some comments for my study?

And it's difficult to reproduce this failure even if met higher failed rated.

  • Dear Simon,

    I have several questions.

    1. What is the charging current you are trying to meet? The absolute maximum output current of the charger is 4 A.

    2. What is the system current you are trying to meet? Are the input FETs correctly sized?

    3. I am having trouble seeing what part failed in the test. Can you please be more explicit about what part failed and if it was the charger?

    4. Can you please investigate the thermal performance of the charger and the board when you are drawing 120 W? I am concerned that the thermal design may be an issue here.

    Thanks,

    Mike Emanuel
