Solar loader for 18V power tool battery management

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25790

Hi,
I need experts help.

I use a Li-ion battery with 5Ah for a 18V power tool and want to load it with a solar panel. Therefore I'm looking for a microcontroller (best would be circuit layout) which is suitable for this application. I intended to use a solar panel with the following features:

  • max. power: 50Wp
  • Voc: 22,3V
  • Vmpp: 18,5V
  • Impp: 2,72A
  • Isc: 2,84A

Can you suggest me a microcontroller for the battery management, resp. load regulator for this application?

Best regards
Matthias

  • Hi Matthias,

Your questions as been routed to the battery management IC group.  We development and support battery charge ICs, not develop microcontroller based charging solutions.  If you want a battery charge IC, I can recommend the BQ25790 family.  The BQ25790 is a WCSP charger capable of up to 24V input and 18V output.  There is a spin of the BQ25790 coming soon in QFN package and with MPPT feature, where it periodically samples Voc and automatically sets the charger to pull only enough current so that the charger input stays at VMPP (as a function of Voc).  You need a host process/controller to set the charger's I2C registers.  If that is of interest, let me know.  If not, I can forward this post to the u-controller team.
