BQ25606: Which components are not necessary if don't use the power system?

Part Number: BQ25606

1) If we do not want to power the system from the BQ25606, which components would be unnecessary? I imagine those that are connected to the SW, BTST, REGN and SYS pins...

2) What is the advantage of powering the system from the BQ25606? That way you would eliminate the need for a BMS for the battery?

Thank you!

  • I would like to add another question: what is the peak current of the BQ25606?

  • Hi,

    1. Most of the external components are still needed. Please visit https://e2e.ti.com/support/power-management/f/196/t/890626 for BQ25606: Schematic Review and PCB Layout Design Tips. Additional Information including FAQs is available http://www.ti.com/lit/an/slva924/slva924.pdf Designing A Standalone Single Cell 3-A Charger with the bq25606.

    2. BQ25606 is a standalone charger. With battery charging is enabled (CE pin is LOW), the device autonomously completes a charging cycle without host.

    Thanks,

    Ning.

  • Thanks!

    Regarding the second question:

    1) Is a BMS required for the battery during discharge? Or does the BQ25606 rule out this need?

    and

    2) Using the current limitation of D + / D-, can the ILIM pin be left floating?

I couldn't find this information in the datasheet.

    Thanks again.

  • Hi,

    1) The charger has basic protection functions when discharging a battery as shown below. BMS is recommended for full battery protection.

If only battery is present and the voltage falls below depletion threshold (VBAT_DPL_FALL), the BATFET turns off

VBAT_DPL_FALL: Battery depletion falling threshold (Q4 turn-off threshold)

Referring to 8.3.7.5.3 System Over-Current Protection on the d/s, When the system is shorted or significantly overloaded and the current exceeds BATFET overcurrent limit  (IBAT > IBATFET_OCP), the BATFET latches off.

    2) ILIM pin can not be float.

    Thanks,

    Ning.
