WEBENCH® Tools/BQ40Z80: How to connect hardware and configure software of BQ40Z80RSMT-03

Part Number: BQ40Z80
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: , BQSTUDIO, EV2400

Tool/software: WEBENCH® Design Tools

According to the support and assistance provided in E2E support forums in the last five weeks, as a thanks, in the process of solving the problem, I have a deep technical understanding of the physical layer of battery management, but there are still problems in the physical layer and link layer.

Explain the following figure, read all the materials of link 1 and link 2, and design the project according to the hardware connection of these documents, but there are still problems.

See file for picture: figure of link 1 and link 2

link 2:BQ40Z80EVM-020

To further describe the above problems, I hope ti's technical engineers in the United States can make a more comprehensive supplement on the basis of TI's technical support in Shanghai, China. The technical engineers in the United States should describe the document described in link 3, The assistance and support of software engineer and circuit board hardware design engineer of chip U7 (Texas Instruments,MSP430F5529IPN), I can help solve the problems in the products of the company I am currently engaged in, complete the correct hardware connection of circuit board BP based on BQ40Z80EVM Li-Ion Battery Pack Manager Evaluation Module, and then configure the software on this basis

  • I have assigned this question to our engineer and he will get back to you later.

  • Hello Jinyi,

In order to connect the BQ40Z80EVM-20 board, you can use the on-board EV2400 by connecting it to a computer using a micro-USB cable. In this configuration the jumper settings for J18 should connect pins 1 and 2, and the jumper setting for J22 should connect pins 2 and 3. From here you can program the EVM using bqStudio.

Alternatively you can use an external EV2400, you can refer to the BQ40Z80EVM User Guide(Section 2.3) to check how to enable the external EV2400. You can also see how to configure the bq40z80 in this user guide(Section 3).

Looking at your word document, to configure/program your circuit board(BP), you need to connect it to an external EV2400 by connecting P4-2(SMBC) and P4-3(SMBD) into the appropriate pin locations of the external EV2400, for more information you can refer to the EV2400 User Guide(Section 2.6). From here you can program the bq40z80 using bqStudio.

To connect a load/charger, connect the positive wire of the load/charger to PACK+ and the ground wire of load/charger to PACK-.

If you have any questions or doubts, let us know and we will assist you further.

    Best Regards,

Yesterday's reply helped me to solve the problem of communication

    2

It can communicate normally, because bq40z80rsmr of BP is a new IC, when programming, the prompt message is

    Program Srec: Packet checksum mismatch.

    3

You need to obtain the firmware corresponding to BQ40Z80RSMR in software bqStudio Version1.3.92 (XXX.srec ) What's the reason

    4

Set to: jumper settings for J18 connect pins 1 and 3, and the jumper setting for J22 connect pins 1 and 3.

    Otherwise, the DashBoard is gray

  • Hello Jinyi,

Make sure you have the latest version of bqStudio. Also, make sure to update the firmware of your BQ40Z80 and EV2400.

To update the firmware of the EV2400, follow the steps in detailed in it's User Guide(Section 3).

To get the firmware of the BQ40Z80, go under the section of 'Software Development' in BQ40Z80 and download the firmware bundle. Install this bundle in a temporary location. Using the .srec file found in the temporary installation folder, follow the instructions found in the BQ40Z80 EVM User Guide(Section 2.5) to update the firmware.

To use the external EV2400 with the EVM, you will want J18 to connect pin 2 and pin 3(EXT SMBD), and J22 to connect pin 1(EXT SMBC) and pin 2.

    Best Regards,

How to update battery pack firmware

    1 Circuit board

1.1: Evaluation board bq40z80evm-020, bms020b, hereinafter referred to as EVM

1.2: Circuit board BP, hereinafter referred to as BP

U3 model in the figure is bq40z80rsmt

2 Before and after firmware update

    bqStudio Version No:BatteryManagementStudio-1.3.92

For the new chip (BQ40Z80RSMR), restarting bqStudio after firmware installation will automatically identify the firmware and automatically establish communication

    3 bqStudio establish firmware process

    Firmware prompt after update:

    Program Srec: Packet checksum mismatch.
