BQ76940: bq769x0 Coulomb Counter Structure

Part Number: BQ76940

Hello forum,

I am working on a BMS system design. I want to use bq769x0 series BM IC due to some advantages. But I didnt understand how CC counter block work entirely. I research delta sigma converter structures, read SLUA775 app. note and also find another sources.

This block has a shunt resistor input and there is a voltage at the enterance of this block. This voltage has a zone -270mV to +270mV.  In scheduler note, one sampling time is divided 64000 cycle over 250ms. For example in below some voltages on the sense resistor is written (assumed) by me.

-at first cycle : 100.000 uV            at second cycle : 100.000 uv       at third cycle : 100.000 uV    . . . .   at thirty-two thousand th cylce : 100.084,4     . . . .    at sixty-four thousandth cycle : 100.084,4

In a time interval for this device there is 64000 sample. But these are only voltage values. How it converts to current or coulomb values. Of course  we can calculate when we assume Rsense value. But operation is not like that of course.

Good days and jobs.

  • Hi Emre,

Yes, the input is voltage.  By calculating with the sense resistor value you can get current. If you use a 1 mOhm resistor, ignoring tolerance you know that 10 mV is 10A if the current was continuous.   You can scale or calibrate your system to adjust for tolerance in the resistor used and board.  Since it is an integrating converter the 10 mV could also be 20A for half the time, or 40A for 1/4 of the time.  Coulombs are current x time, the time is 250ms nominal, you can calculate the coulombs and sum for the accumulated value.

  • Hi dear supporter,

Actually I wanted to learn what accumulate in CC atomic registers. Already as Ohm's Law I=V/R. Host controller get this value from BM-IC and make math calculations and know how many amps. But what stored throughout one interval so 250 ms (64000 cyclyes). Are these 6400 voltage values or avarage values over 64000 cycles due to delta-sigma structure. I think, I didnt complete this part of the puzzle.

  • Hi Emre,

There is a brief description and diagram in the coulomb counter section of the application note at https://www.ti.com/lit/an/slua775/slua775.pdf .  The internal registers of the coulomb counter are not available nor the intermediate results. We don't describe how to implement a coulomb counter, please consult available educational materials.

  • Hi dear Mastermind,

Thank you for your kindly replies. These are not useful for me ,still thanks.

    Good days and jobs
