TPS2492: Question about gate capacitor control.

Part Number: TPS2492

Hello, I am trying to use TPS2492 for how-swap.

I want to use this TPS2492 for limiting the current and inrush control, ocv, ovp, as simple as I can.

But in the datasheet there says alternative Inrush Designs with gate capacitor (dV/dt) Control.

In the datasheet there says " The TPS2492/93 can be used with applications that require constant turn-on currents."

.

.

.

What does this mean? Application that require constant turn-on currents?

Could anyone explain more easily about this function?

When, and what system do I have to use this function? (what is good and bad effect of this?)

Thanks.

  • Hi Hong,

Inrush current can be limited by operating the device in power limit or current limit during startup. The other way to limit the inrush current is by operating the device in soft-start mode with dv/dt circuit on the GATE. Through this approach, constant inrush current can be achieved which in this datasheet is termed as "constant turn-on currents".

For more information, please refer Section 2.2.2 in https://www.ti.com/lit/an/slva673a/slva673a.pdf

Can you share your system specifications, protection requirements, end product details to suggest better options.

    Best Regards, Rakesh

  • Dear Rakesh.

I read slva673 that you linked. Thanks for the information.

I am going to use Hotswap for the main Power path to the system from the 28V battery.

    Maximum current is about 20A.

According to slva673, hotswap with dv/dt inrush control can reduce the inrush current and ensure that the MOSFET can survive.

I think then this would be always good for any design.

Then does this dv/dt inrush control has any disadvantages except using more BOM?

  • Hi Hong,

The dv/dt startup circuit discussed in that app note comes into operation only during startup and does not impact the protection features of hot-swap
