TPS1H200A-Q1: Max external adjustable current limit

Part Number: TPS1H200A-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS1HB50-Q1

Hi team,

How can customer configure max value of current limit with external resister ?

Customer can use the equation 1 to set the external adjustable current limit but we cannot see the max value of external adjustable current limit.

Thank you and best regards,

Michiaki

  • Hi Michiaki,

Thanks for reaching out on E2E!

The max current limit possible for the device is the internal current limit which is 4.8A (typ). A greater current limit cannot be achieved using an external resistor.

For example, if Iout = 4.8A (the internal current limit) is inserted into equation 1, this corresponds to a resistance Rcl of 416.7ohms. In this case, an external resistance less than 416.7ohms will not result in a greater current limit.

    Best Regards,

    Elizabeth

  • Hello Elizabeth,

Please let me double check the below.

The current limit defined by equation 1 in the datasheet is for adjustment of current limit lower than typ 4.8A that is configured by CL pin tied to GND ?
Can’t customer configure larger number of current limit than 4.8A (typ) ?

    Thank you and best regards,

    Michiaki

RE: TPS1H200A-Q1: Max external adjustable current limit

  • Hello Michiaki,

For the TPS1H200, a current limit greater than 4.8 A (typ) cannot be achieved using an external resistor.

However, our high side switch portfolio has a wide range of current limits. If you could tell me more about your application, I can recommend a different high side switch.

    Specifically:

-What is the current limit you are hoping to achieve?

    -What is your supply voltage?

-How many off-board loads are you planning to deliver power to? And are they inductive, capacitive, or resistive in nature?

    Best Regards,

    Elizabeth

  • Hello Elizabeth,

    Here is their condition.

    -       Supply voltage             24V

    -       Current limit                  around 5A

Is TPS1HB50-Q1 good for customer ?

    Thank you and best regards,

    Michiaki

  • Michiaki,

Yes, the TPS1HB50 supports those conditions. However, I would caution that the TPS1HB50 does not clamp the current like the TPS1H200 does. When the current limit is hit, the TPS1HB50 latches off. If the customer is driving a large capacitive load, this is not ideal.

Could you give me more information on the load the customer wants to drive?

    Best Regards,

    Elizabeth
