BQ40Z50-R2: Functional Temperature

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z50, BQ40Z80

The old BQ20z95 and the much newer BQ40z80 have a 'functional temperature' stated on the datasheet. Does the BQ40z50 have one?

Also, what does this 'functional temperature' mean? I understand that it's not an operating temperature so the device shouldn't be expected to operate normally at this poiint, but it's also not a storage temperature,so I assume the device is expected to be powered in some way. Does this mean it is OK as long as the device is not in normal mode (i.e it's in sleep or shutdown) or does it have to be in shutdown mode only or somethign else?

Thanks

  • Hello David,

I'm checking with the validation team, I will get back to you when I hear from them.

    Sincerely,

  • Hello David,

The bq40z50 and bq40z80 have the same temperature ratings for functional temperature. The storage temperature does include the low power modes of the devices.

  • So I can safely run both the bq40z50 and the 40z80 up to 150*C provided they are in shutdown or sleep mode? Does that include AFE and the charge pumps etc as they can all be active during sleep mode.

What does the functional temperature mean then if normal operation/normal mode is only assured up to 85*C?

  • Hello David,

Just shutdown mode is covered, running the charge pumps and other peripherals at the max temperature of 150degC could cause damage. The storage temperature range is intended for the lowest power storage case.

I believe you are talking about the min/max used in the datasheet. Those are the test conditions for the min and max values in those tables, the functional temperature range is the absolute min and max temperatures to operate the gauge fully.

To operate in any other mode than shutdown I would stay within the functional temperature range (max 110degC for both the bq40z50 and bq40z80)

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller
