TPS2121: Power Mux IC

Part Number: TPS2121
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2113A, TPS2115A

Hello,

For my application I need to switch between USB and battery power. IC TPS2121 has min. input voltage of 2.8V. But for my application, the battery voltage can drop to 2.4V.

Is there any other IC available with min. input voltage of 2.4V, min. output current of 300mA?

Thanks in advance

  • Hi Jain,

What the voltages of your input rails normally? What is the situation where the battery voltage will be chosen at 2.4V?

We have devices in the TPS211xA (TPS2115A , TPS2113A) family that is capable of supporting voltages on one input down to 1.5V as long as the other input is above 2.8V. This is to effectively power the device and provide the correct internal references.

  • Hello,

I am using USB power of 5V (higher priority) as main power supply. Incase, if USB power is not available, then the circuit is powered from 3V battery. But the battery voltage may drop to 2.4V after certain time of usage.

I have a Boost converter as next stage which maintains a constant output of 3V power for the circuit.

Is there any other IC or method to switch between USB and battery power?

    Thanks

  • Hi Jain,

At this time, TI does not have a PowerMUX that can be powered only from a 2.4V voltage supply.

It is possible to use Load Switches to PowerMUX. This system would require more board space and may not have the same switching capabilities compared to a PMUX(with respect to speed) but it does allow lower voltage support.

Please refer to the following App Note as it describes PMUXing with load switches: https://www.ti.com/lit/an/slva811a/slva811a.pdf

One major consideration is that you cannot use a load switch with integrated Quick Output Discharge (QOD) when building this system.
