BQ40Z50-R2: bq40z50-r2

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: EV2400

Hi,

We've developped a 3S1P battery using the bq40z50-r2 component as a gauge, but sometimes, the battery is "blocked". We do not receive informations from the gauge when it is connected to our charger (a LTC1760), and when we try to connect it with the EV2400, it is not recognized, like the SMBus was not functionnal anymore.

We are obliged to do a hard reset (disconnect the cells to stop the gauge alimentation) so that we can recover the communication.

Do you have an idea where it could come from? If you need our configuration or golden files, we can send them to you.

Thanks in advance for your answer.

Best regards,

Renaud

  • Hello Renaud,

Is this happening to all your packs or just a few? If this is a custom board and you are driving large FETs with the gauge you may need to increase the capacitance on the PBI pin of the gauge or it will brownout.

Yes any information or files you can send will be helpful.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller

  • bq40z50-r2_IRTS.zipHello Wyatt,

    Thanks for your answer.

We haven't developped many pack untl now, but it appeared on several. And as it is difficult to reproduce, I can't say if this would happen on each pack.

We've indeed developped our own board for the gauge. Please find attached the schematics of our board, the golden file and the datasheet of the pack we're using.

    Best regards,

    Renaud

  • Hello Renaud,

If the communication isn't responsive it seems the gauge is going into shutdown mode somehow. What are the conditions the gauge enters the unresponsive state? Is it when there's a high load or reaching discharge termination?

I checked your FETs in the schematic, the gauge should be able to drive those.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller
