TPS2373: TPS2373-3 class selection and ORing Logic

Part Number: TPS2373
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDA-050023

Hi,

We are using TPS2373-3 as PD controller in our design. As per the our design requirement, we need to deliver 48W (peak).

1) We are configuring the PD class as Class 6. It this right or need to configure as higher class considering efficiency?

As per the below table in datasheet of TPS2373, the minimum and maximum power at PD is 40W to 51W.

But as per the key specifications of TIDA-050023 reference design, the output current with POE input is 3.7A @12V when operated at class 6.  Which provides 44.4W.

Then,  is it possible to achieve upto 51W with class 6?.

2) We need to use 12V adapter and need to set adapter as main priority when both 12V adapter and POE are present. As per TIDA-050023, the alternate power adapter voltage has to be in the range of 42-57 V.

Is there any solution to set the ORING logic and Priority in low BOM cost.

  • Hello,

    1. The class 6 range is as you said, 40-51W. Since 44W is between 40-51W, TIDA050023A is set as class 6. Yes you would need to consider the efficiency of your DC-DC design as a part of your overall power delivery. Especially since this is higher power. Most DC-DC designs I see are in the low to mid 90's range.

    2. We have an application note on how to OR the DC-DC with different adapter voltages and priorities. I would recommend a diode-OR on the output for lowest cost:
