BQ34Z100-G1: Can't get the device to turn to learning status, calculated capacity not correct

Part Number: BQ34Z100-G1

I use BQ34Z100-G1 with a 7Ah 12V lead acid battery (closed cell). I use 808 chemistry. After 9 charge-discharge cycles, the values are still off. Also the learned status does not change.

The flags seem to be allright. One error I can see is that the CHG flag is not removed on discharging. What is happening ?

  • Hello Sibe,

Could you provide the .gg and the log of the cycles? It is hard to debug from looking at the posted information.

Have you programmed the design capacity, terminate voltage, and FC into the gauge?

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller

  • Thank you for your quick response !

    I have attached the files.

I have set the design capacity in /configuration/data at 7000

The termination voltage is set at /configuration/discharge/cell BL setvolt threshold at 1980

cell BH setvolt threshold is 2300

Flash update cell volt is 2800

Cell BH clear threshold is 2200 and 2000 (it is mentioned twice, I should probably set the same value)

  • Hello Sibe,

Could you export the .gg file, it takes longer to look through all the .fs files. With the .gg we can easily see any configuration problems.

In your log file at the end of the first charge the current looks really choppy, this can cause some issues while performing the learning cycle. Try to provide the cleanest charge/discharge cycles you can during the learning period and see if it completes successfully.

Also make sure to follow this closely to make sure all the correct commands and bits are being set: http://e2e.ti.com/cfs-file/__key/communityserver-discussions-components-files/196/8267.How-to-Complete-a-Successful-Learning-Cycle-for-the-BQ34z100.pdf

  • Thank you.

I have found how to make a .gg file from bq studio (attached).

I use a lab power supply on CC/CV. I do not think it is unstable. I will try different currents.

The product will be equipped with a MPPT solar charger. This will vary by the minute, until considered full by the charger. The testing includes 14.5 Volts pulses. It will then switch to maintenance charge, which is 12.4 V (stable). Could that be made to wordk with BQ34Z100-G1 ? Is there any documentation or things I could read ?

  • Hello Sibe,

Your configuration looks correct, I think your charge and discharge currents may be a little low from looking through the learning cycle document. Try cycling them again and follow the the guide:

    http://e2e.ti.com/cfs-file/__key/communityserver-discussions-components-files/196/8267.How-to-Complete-a-Successful-Learning-Cycle-for-the-BQ34z100.pdf

There are no application notes or reference designs for this kind of application yet, but the gauge should be able to gauge for this application.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller
