LP2951-N: Expected effects of exceeding abs max Vin

Team,

my customer is using LP2951ACMM-3.3. Nominal Vin is 10V.

As part of failure considerations, they would like to know the behavior of the device when abs max Vin is exceeded -> Vin =38V
It's ok for the device to be destroyed.

Will the device pass the input voltage through to the output?
Do you have any experience what may happen?

Hi Franziskus,

When Vin>38V, you have a higher chance to damage the ESD structure at the input PIN and it could result in a Vin shorted to GND failure. At the same time, there is a chance the stress on the pass-FET could also result in Vin to Vout failure.

Will the device pass the input voltage through to the output?

--Yes, it's possible when the pass-FET is damaged.

Do you have any experience what may happen?

--The failure mechanism is similar but the voltage for the failure to start happen could vary from part-to-part, I don't have experience to this particular part.

Just one more thing to clarify: are your considerations true for Vin>38V or Vin>30V?

As the absolute max on the Vin is 30V, any stress over 30V, you are running into the risk of damaging the part as I previously described. With higher Vin, the chance of damage will become significantly higher.
