BQ40Z80: Enter Shutdown Mode without SM-Bus

Hi Ti Experts,

we have developed a BMS with the bq40z80. It is a 7S1P Lion application.

Is there any other possibility to enter Shutdown Mode, than a MAC command 0x0010 or an Voltage Based Shutdown?

I am looking for something like to short-circuit the PBI capacitor (red line in the picture).

Hello Klaus,

There is no interrupt you can send to put the gauge into shutdown. There is an interrupt if you want to enter emergency shutdown mode, but this mode performs a different function than shutdown mode.

We would not recommend shorting the PBI pin, this will cause a brownout of the gauge if it has a short term demand for power.

thanks for your answer.

At the moment I am not able to send any command.

Is there any other possiblity to reset or shutdown the bq40z80?

The BMS is mounted on the battery and I can not disconect and connect it again. I am sure that
a power off and power on will work.

Hello Klaus,

There's no way besides the methods outlined in the TRM. You can have an interrupt to your host and then send the shutdown command.
