BQ25792: Is there an SMBus version for the BQ2579x

Part Number: BQ25792
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25790, , BQ25710

Hi Support Team,

Came across your newly released charger ICs BQ25790 (DSBGA) / BQ25792 (QFN)
It appears that both devices are functionally equivalent with I2C interface. Difference is in the package.

Do you plan to have versions with SMBus interface?

Best,
AJ

  • Hi AJ,

You are current.  The 790 and 792 are functionally equivalent but in different packages.  Currently, there is no plan for an SMBUS version but if there is enough customer demand, there is a possibility.  What is your end application, volume and mass production date?

    Regards,

    Jeff

  • Hi Jeff, thank you for the information.

The application is intended for industrial smart battery charger.
One requirement is battery charging without host MCU control, i.e. system is powered off.

As per SBSC v1.1, depending on internal battery temperature and state of charge, the battery would request charge voltage / current directly from the charger over SMBus without System Host intervention. However, this is not possible over I2C interface as the battery does not "see" the charger.

The BQ25792 autonomous charge feature is useful, thought it lacks enhanced charging profiles in cases where smart pack NTC output is not available in multi-cell packs.

    Best,
    AJ

  • Thanks.  I will forward to our development team.  Please check out BQ25710.  It is an SMBUS battery charge controller with external FETs.

    Regards,

    Jeff
