BQ24192: compatible Fuel gauge selection

Part Number: BQ24192
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ27531-G1, BQ27426

Hi,

We have selected a bq24192 charger chip for my custom board design and looking for a fuel gauge.

As per our fuel gauge requirement, there are two options: bq27426 and bq27531-G1. For the bq24192 charger chip, TI suggests the compatible Fuel gauge part is bq27531.

Found the following benefits of bq27531 over bq27426:

  • bq27531 supports battery ship mode while working with bq24192 charger and also have other FP compatible alternate parts from TI.
  • The battery chem ID we need for our battery is 1201.  BQ27426 default Chem ID: 3230 and BQ27531 default Chem ID: 1201.

We want to understand the benefit of bq27426 over bq27531 to make a fair decision between both. Price and package are acceptable for both.

FG Interrupt requirement:- Configurable Interrupt option with interrupt support in low power/sleep mode:

Please help to resolve the below queries related to interrupt:

  1. For BQ27531-G1, Will the BL_INT be functional in sleep mode and we shall get the interrupt on SOC_INT pin? We believe this is true for Normal mode and want to confirm for the low power sleep mode.
  2. For BQ27426, Will the BATLOWEN be functional in sleep mode and we shall get the interrupt on GPOUT pin? We believe this is true for Normal mode and want to confirm for the low power sleep mode.

Thanks,

Ritesh Patel.

  • Hello Ritesh,

The battery chemistry would be easy to update along with the other configuration data you need for the gauge.

Both gauges have interrupts enabled during sleep mode, you can also test it out with an EVM. The gauge will wake up with a set interval time and when it updates the data that's when it will set the interrupt.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller

  • Hi Wyatt,

    Thanks for the quick response.

The battery chemistry would be easy to update along with the other configuration data you need for the gauge. [Ritesh] here we understood that the battery chemistry update is easy in both gauges. However, our desired battery chemistry is set in bq27531. We do not have any plan to use other battery chemistry than Lithium Polymer. Seems bq27531 is a good option. What is your thought on this?

Both gauges have interrupts enabled during sleep mode, you can also test it out with an EVM. The gauge will wake up with a set interval time and when it updates the data that's when it will set the interrupt.
    [Ritesh] Few questions:

    • The gauge will wake up from sleep mode to normal mode at a set interval time, Is this correct understanding?
    • Is set interval time fixed in fuel gauge or we can configure it? Where to configure if we can?

    Thanks.

  • Hello Ritesh,

I think the bq27531-g1 would work well with your charger, especially since they are designed to complement each other.

It will take IVT measurements every 20 seconds in sleep mode instead of every 1 second in normal mode. The time interval is set at 20s. The gauge only briefly wakes up from sleep mode to take measurements, if the conditions are met for it to exit sleep into normal mode then it will go into normal mode.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller

  • Thank you Wyatt for clarifying the doubts.

[Ritesh] Is this 20 sec and 1 sec time interval set in the bq27426 chip as well? Does bq27426 also briefly wake up and exit the sleep mode as described above?

  • Hello Ritesh,

Yes, both gauges sample IVT data every 20 seconds in sleep mode. The gauge will only exit sleep mode if the conditions are met to exit when it samples the IVT data.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller
