BQ40Z80EVM-020: About the function setting of BQ40Z80

Part Number: BQ40Z80EVM-020
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO, EV2400

1. Is there a detailed setting procedure for setting the battery balance? Or you can imitate the instructions.
    E.g:
    a. Balance configuration [CB] = 1
    b. Update status = [OE].....

2. We have used high current (500A), and the current scaling is explained in TRM6.7 Current Scaling.
However, we don't know very well. Are there detailed setting steps?

3. The overcurrents for charging and discharging are OCC1, OCC2/OCD1, OCD2. Can OCC1/OCC2 be set the same?
Because we only need to use one. There is "Latch Limit" in OCD Recovery, we don't quite understand how to use it?

4. In Registers. When it is red, it means protection or the function is activated. When it is green, it means that the protection is released or the function is closed.
Can I understand it this way?
    In Data Memory->Settings->Protection->Enabled Protections A, there are bit7~bit0, if here OCC1, OCC2 write "1",
Will the status change to red in Registers? What is the relationship between the settings in Data Memory and Registers?

Sorry, there are so many things I don’t understand~

  • Hello Adam,

    1. Is there a detailed setting procedure for setting the battery balance? Or you can imitate the instructions.

The procedure to set-up cell balancing can be found in the Technical Reference Manual(Chapter 8). You will have to go through the Learning Cycle(Update Status = 0E) before the cell balancing works.

    2. We have used high current (500A), and the current scaling is explained in TRM6.7 Current Scaling. However, we don't know very well. Are there detailed setting steps?

I would recommend you read this Application Report(Section 2) to get better informed on current scaling. The Scale Factor setting is found in Data Memory>Settings>Current Scaling. That being said, 500-A might be too high, the sense resistor should not exceed +/- 100mV. If it does it can be less accurate. Also the pins SRN/SRP should not get voltages lower than -0.3-V that could occur at that higher currents, which could damage the IC.

    3. The overcurrents for charging and discharging are OCC1, OCC2/OCD1, OCD2. Can OCC1/OCC2 be set the same?

Yes I believe you can set them the same value. However you could also disable OCC2 in Enabled Protections A if you do not need it. To see a more detail look at this you can check the Technical Reference Manual(Section 19.2.4.2) when it is green, it means it is set at 0, so it is disabled.

    4. In Registers. When it is red, it means protection or the function is activated. When it is green, it means that the protection is released or the function is closed. Can I understand it this way?

Essentially, yes. When a register is red, it means that it is set high(Set at 1). When it is green it means it is set low(Set at 0). The settings in Data Memory will affect how the registers will behave.

  • Hi Salomon,

Thank you for your answer, it is very helpful to us, we will try to set it. In addition, there are still some questions that need your help.

1.Regarding Export, I tried to export, but it was rejected. Do I need to pay attention to those settings?

2.I have a BQ40Z80EVM-020 analog board for testing, but after removing the battery, and then installing the battery, it cannot be connected to the computer?
It displays the error message "No acknowledge from device." or "Not able to find a free communications adapter." Where should I start troubleshooting?

    3. In the function bar of the bqStudio software, there is a "Start Auto Cycle". Is this function an item about the function of battery learning? What settings do I need to pay attention to?

The screenshot is a screen where Export is banned.

  • Hello Adam,

1.Regarding Export, I tried to export, but it was rejected. Do I need to pay attention to those settings?

It should be as easy as to click export and save the file anywhere. Do you have administrative power in your computer? Something might be blocking bqStudio when creating a .gg file. It's important to export settings to save your configuration.

2.I have a BQ40Z80EVM-020 analog board for testing, but after removing the battery, and then installing the battery, it cannot be connected to the computer? It displays the error message "No acknowledge from device." or "Not able to find a free communications adapter." Where should I start troubleshooting?

Does the EV2400 remain connected to bqStudio when you do this? The device might be going into SHUTDOWN mode when you disconnect the battery, you might have to wake up your device again my pressing the WAKE button(S1). Did you configure your device to detect battery removal as it is mentioned in the Technical Reference Manual(Section 6.2.1)

    3. In the function bar of the bqStudio software, there is a "Start Auto Cycle". Is this function an item about the function of battery learning? What settings do I need to pay attention to?

Looks like this is a planned feature that has yet to be fully implemented. You will have to go through the learning cycle manually using your power supply.
