BQ76PL455A: Configuration of CELL_OV

Part Number: BQ76PL455A

Hi team,

Customer would like to know about CELL_OV setting.

They set register of CELL_OV to 0xFFFC. It seems to be set 5V OV setting.

However, when the voltage exceed 5V, nothing have happened.

Do you have any idea why the OV setting didn't work well?

Could you tell me how to configure OV setting for highest  OV?

Best regards,

Takuya

  • Hi Takuya,

Please ask customer to make sure than NCHAN[NUM_CHAN] is configured correctly for the number of cells they have connected to the VSENSE pins, then set the OV threshold using CELLOV[OV_THRES_CELL] and make sure that they are monitoring registers FAULT_OV (0x56-0x57) and FAULT_SUM[ (0x52-0x53) to know if an OV fault occurred.

They can also program a different OV threshold setting (something in the middle) to trigger the fault to confirm it is working before moving to the highest setting. I also recommend measuring the voltage with a DMM directly on the VSENSE pins to confirm that the device has the expected voltage at each cell.

  • Hi Leslie,

    thank you for your support.

I will check NCHAN and VSENSE pin connection with customer.

just to confirm, if they want to set OV threshold voltage to 5V(the highest value), the CELLOV register should be 0xFFFC, shouldn't it?

if not, could you tell me correct value of CELL_OV register?

    >>They can also program a different OV threshold setting (something in the middle) to trigger the fault to confirm it is working before moving to the highest setting.

Actually, they set CELL_OV to 0xFFF0 and confirmed that OV is detected.

I asked COMP_OV configuration and it is 0xFE.

    best regards,

    Takuya

  • Hi Takuya,

"if they want to set OV threshold voltage to 5V(the highest value), the CELLOV register should be 0xFFFC, shouldn't it?" [LM] Yes, that's correct.

"I asked COMP_OV configuration and it is 0xFE" [LM] COMP_OV is to configure the OV comparator threshold. This is different than the cell voltage threshold CELL_OV.

I recommend to use the device GUI, specifically the "Thresholds" tab, which has the OV/UV threshold that can be configured on the device with easy user interface since voltage can be entered instead of the hexadecimal code directly. You can set the voltage desired and then move to "Setup" tab and click on "show register" and then "read all registers" to see the hexadecimal value that corresponds to the voltage configured on the "Thresholds" tab.

    Best regards,

    Leslie

  • Hi Takuya,

I'm going to go ahead and close this thread since we are already discussing this on a separate email conversation.
