BQ4050: Whether the BQ4050 support 1 cell (12.8V,LiFePo4)

Hi Expert,

The engineer want to use the BQ4050 for one cell applicant.

The battery spec is 9Ah, 12.8V, LiFePo4.

Pls advice how to connect the BQ4050 VC1~VC5 for this one 12.8V battery.

And how to configure the FW setting.

If the BQ4050 not support this applicant,pls also advice the right solution to us.

    Nominal voltage for 1S LFP is around 3.2V. I believe you are referring to 4S (4 cells in series) configuration. We have some options:

    1) BQ40z50-R2 has a feature through FW to account for LFP chemistry, however depending on load profile and flat zone of discharge curve, it can be trickier to gauge.

    2) BQ4050 can be better for ease of use for LFP.

    3) If you don't have access to each individual cell, you can consider using BQ34z100-G1. This does gauging from top of the battery stack.

  • Hi Rushi,

    The customer only get one individual 12.8V battery (4 cells in series inside)

    We concert this battery to BQ4050 EVM VC1,then short the VC1~VC4 together.

    But now CELL 1 still show 0V from bqstudio.

    We try to increase the Safety Cell Overvoltage and Safety Cell Overvoltage setting to 15V,but still not work. 

    And pls advice how to configure the EVM setting.

  • Hello Eric,

    I would recommend you use the bq34z100-g1 for the top of stack applications when you don't have access cell voltages.

    The bq4050 will need to see the cell voltages to operate correctly.

  • bq4050 EVM contains BQ296103DSGR (hardware OVP protector). BQ296103DSGR will be trigger if the VC higher than 4.5V and turn off FETs. bq4050 will receive FUSE below from BQ296103DSGR. please refer to bq34z100-g1 for such application.
