LM317MQ: behavior of the device during output short circuit condition

Part Number: LM317MQ
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM317M

Hello Team,

One of my customer is using LM317MQDCYR in their design as 5V regulator.

They want to understand behavior of the device during output short circuit condition. Can you please through some light on that? I went through the datasheet, but it only explains operation during overloading , not for short circuit.

Output voltage is 5V and it is continuously short on vehicle in this situation what is the LDO performance? will it get damage or protected by short circuit? What is maximum time for short circuit protection?

Please help to confirm this at earliest.

Thank you!

  • Hi Mahendra,

Yes. The LM317M has both over-current and over-temperature protection. The way this works is that the device will foldback its current limit based on the die temperature. The datasheet hints at how this works here:

If the Power Dissipation (PD) exceeds PD(MAX) the device thermally shuts down. Please note that this maximum is not intended to show continuous current as thermally these current levels will drop quickly.
