UCC28180: How to convert UCC28180 PFC gate driver to Totempole PFC driver

Part Number: UCC28180
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCD3138

Hi TI Experts,

We are using UCC28180 for our 2KW PFC. We are planning to improve our PFC with Bridgeless PFC.

Is there any way to convert UCC28180 single gate drive output to Totempole driver outputs(high side and Low side driver) outputs?

Regards

Aneesh

  • Hello Aneesh,

Q1 and Q2 provide a totem pole driver to the FET below.

  • Hi John,

Thanks for replying me. Actually my question was different.

I wanted to convert my PFC to Bridgeless PFC. So i want to generate Q1 and Q2 drive signals (from below figure) from a single UCC28180 gate signal.

So how to generate these Q1 and Q2 drive signal from a single gate signal from UCC28180?.

    Regards

  • Hello Aneesh,
We do not have a reference design or application data for such a topology.
You will also have to find some means of sensing the inductor current.
Do you have any idea how you will do that ?

  • Hi John,

I Just saw an application note from cree/wolfspeed. It is a 2.2KW Bridgeless PFC design using infenion PFC controller ICE3PCS01G.

It is an analog PFC controller having only a single gate drive. But the application note derives a second drive signal(To drive the TOP MOSFET) from this.

I was searching for a similar circuits of bridgeless PFC with TI analog chips. That is why my question arise.

You can see the cree/wolfspeed reference design from the below link.

  • Hi Aneesh,

Thank you for sharing this document. I had not seen it before and it an interesting read.
In answer to your first question it appears that you can generate the Q2 signal from the GDA output of the pfc controller
and the Q1 signal is the inverse of GDA .
So Q1 gate drive can be generated from an inverter gate drive.
An issue I see is in measuring the switch current.
Thew summary page 39 of the document mentions an "Innovative resistor based current sensing solution."
Page 23 shows the nature of the current input signal.

Attached is a link to a seminar from TI on totem pole pfc

This uses a digital controller to control the pfc.

  • Hi John,

Thanks for sharing the TI Document. It sounds so good and very informative.

The document implements the Bridgeless PFC using UCD3138,which is a digital power controller.  But we are looking for some analog IC Based solution.

Now i have a doubt, If i go for some analog IC based solution

Whether Q1 gate signal can be generated by simply inverting the Q2 Gate drive signal?. If it is possible Why Cree application note is not doing so?.

They are not generating Q1 Signal from by inverting Q2.

    What could be the reason?

  • Hi Aneesh,

The best thing to do is contact the author of the document and ask that question.
I cant really comment since it is not a topology I have used with the UCC28180
