UCC28220-Q1: Interleaved boost converter

Part Number: UCC28220-Q1

Hello There,

I am working on Interleaved boost converter for EV application. I require help regarding inductor current ripple. How much exactly current ripple should be allowed in inductor current ? I know most of the time 20% of phase current is taken generally. But can we increase the current ripple to reduce the inductor size? what are the criteria for considering particular values of current ripple ?

Thanks and regards,

Akshay

  • Hello Akshay,

The energy stored in the inductor and its physical size is proportional to the L*Ipk^2 product.
If you reduce the inductance the peak current will increase and this will have push the size upwards.
Also the increased current ripple will result in a high RMS current which tends to increase the losses.
The higher ripple will cause more voltage ripple in the output and this negates the effect of interleaving.

Normally a ripple current of 20% to 30% is used in most applications.
The inductance value chosen is a compromise between performance and cost and you will need to decide what is best for your design requirements.

    Regards
