UCC3895: With Average Current Design

Part Number: UCC3895
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC28951

Dear Team,

Here is Kevin from Delta Taiwan.

Do we have reference design with UCC3895 with average current implement in the circuit?

Customer is interesting with this design+external components to achieve average current.

Kevin

  • Hi Kevin

I'm not aware of any reference designs using Average Current Mode control for UCC3895 or any of the other Phase Shifted Full Bridge controllers in our portfolio. I think this is due to the fact that Average Current Mode control will not provide any protection against transformer saturation or shoot through currents. The vast majority of PSFB designs use Peak Current Mode control and some use Voltage Mode Control. In any case, the UCC3895 was designed mainly for Voltage Mode Control and Peak Current Mode Control - It would be possible to use it for Average Current Mode control but I would not recommend it.

The question is really what do you need the finished product to do. For example if it is a battery charger and needs a CI/CV characteristic then there are excellent solutions using Peak Current Mode control already available. For example the reference design https://www.ti.com/tool/PMP8740 uses the UCC28951 PSFB controller and has a CI/CV characteristic. The approach, using two external error amplifiers, would work also if you chose the UCC3895 controller.

Please let me know if you need further information - I want to make sure you choose the best solution for your application. You can email me directly at
