TPS27S100: Rpu for open load detection.

Hi team.

My customer are considering Rpu for open load detection.
I'll recommend 15kΩ from a datasheet.

But, they want to use 6.8kΩ.
I think it is NG. because it is below V(ol,off)'s threshold.
V(ol,off) = 6.8kΩ * 150uA = 1.02V

Is my understanding correct?

Sincerely.
Kengo.

  • Hi Kengo,

A 6.8kOhm resistor is a stronger pull up between in and out. Vin-Vout < V(ol,off) for longer than td(ol,off) for open load to be detected.

On the other hand a 6.8kOhm will cause bigger leakage between the input supply and output load. The lower the resistance(stronger pull up) used, the higher chance you get on shorting the load to the supply.

This is why TI recommends a 15kOhm resistance as it provides a good pull up but also reduces leakage between in and out.

Thank you for choosing TI Power Switches in your designs.
