(INA219BIDCNR ) Question for Which Line to Sense Current From

Part Number: INA219

Hello,

I've been trying to figure out the below question regarding usage/measurement of INA219BIDCNR:

“What is the recommended line to sense current when designing for an AC mains application ? would it be the Live (HOT) or Neutral where the should be in series with ?“

I’ve been unable to find suitable information to make a recommendation - is there any help you can offer for this?

Thank you,

  • Hello Kaili,

Welcome to the forum. We appreciate your questions.

Overall, as long as the common-mode voltage (Vcm) rating of the INA219 is not violated, then the device will not be damaged.

It is not recommended to connected INA219 to HOT line at all. This only works if the device is supplied with a floating 5-V source that is derived from the AC voltage itself. For example, if you used created an AC to DC voltage rectifier that generates a 5V source that floats with the 120VAC, then the INA219 would not break; however, the digital communication lines will still be high-voltage with respect to Earth ground and thus will require level shifting.

You could connect INA219 to the Neutral line since this is grounded. You still want to be careful that there are no ground loops between Neutral and system ground.

    Hope this helps.

    Best,

    Peter

  • Thank you for the quick response Peter, this makes perfect sense!
