Tool/software: WEBENCH® Design Tools

I am trying to design a dc to dc converter . My requirements are as follows:.

input voltage=40 to 60V

output voltage=24V

output current =10A

I'm using LM5116 IC and the design given as in WEBENCH for that design efficiency is mentioned as 97%, but I'm using different MOSFETS . So I want to know how the efficiency is calculated for the design in WEBENCH .

Hi Sheetal,

WEBENCH calculates each individual buck converter loss when calculating efficiency.

When you generate the WEBENCH report you can see plots of each individual power loss,

Hi Orlando,

My query is what about the power dissipation at the input and output capacitors?

How do you calculated the dissipation for those components?

Sheetal,

For the power dissipation of the capacitors the calculation is based on the RMS ripple current and ESR.

P = (I_RMS^2)* R_ESR.

The ESR is small (~mΩ) so the capacitor power dissipation is ~µW and much less compared to other losses.
