TPS27S100: Question about Watt Rating of RLIM Resistor

Part Number: TPS27S100

The EVM shows a watt rating of 0.5W for the variable resistor used.

If possible, my customer would really like to use a 0.1W resistor here when they set the ILIM...

Are there any considerations on the current through this resistor, and what the proper power rating should be?

Regards,

Darren

  • Hi Darren,

The internal current mirror of the device pulls 1/2000th of the load current through the CL.

Assuming you have 4A of load current, 2mA will flow through the ILIM resistor.

The resistor chosen has to be within its power rating (I^2 *R_ILIM < 0.1W). We usually recommend a 0.5W resistor here for posterity to avoid any thermal changes to resistance when used. But if the power dissipation is low, I do not believe that using a 0.1W resistor is an issue.
