BQ40Z50-R2: Learn cycle after field swap?

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R2

Hello

I have a design that requires a device's batteries be field swappable. The configuration is 2S1P LiFePO4 as individual cells. The device is to include a BQ40Z50-R2 gas gauge. My question is: is it the recommendation that a learn cycle be completed each time 2 new cells are swapped into the device? My gut feeling is yes, since the cells can vary in terms of internal resistance between each cell from the same manufacturer.

Thank you

Sean

  • Hello Sean,

Usually the learning cycle is done on a single representative battery pack for the golden file. Which then would be used to program any other pack. There should be minimal variations between packs in well-controlled manufacturing processes. Any small variations between the packs internal resistances, the gauge should be able to adjust for during field operation. This is all explained in this Application Report.

If you are swapping cells from the same manufacturer, you should have no issues. You don't have to run the learning cycle each time the cells are swapped.
