BQ4050: What is the difference between bq4050 and bq40z50?

1. They are based on different algorithms. BQ4050 is based on our CEDV algorithm and BQ40z50-R2 is based on our Impedance Track algorithm. Impedance Track has better accuracy because it takes into account the impedance profile of the battery over the lifetime of the pack, while also compensating for factors related to load, temperature, etc. This helps to provide for a highly accurate state-of-charge and state-of-health reporting. CEDV is slightly easier to configure but not as accurate as the Impedance Track based solution. 

2. Either can be used. The decision also depends on battery chemistry. While both devices can support a 4S pack, certain cell chemistries such as LFP can work better with CEDV.

For SMBus the data lines are held high externally and pulled low by the controllers for communication, from the SMBus standard the voltage threshold to be considered "high" is 2.1V.
