LP5036: LED Driver with P82B715 and TCA9548A

Part Number: LP5036
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: P82B715, TCA9548A, , P82B96

Hi E2E Team,

for a project I want to use the LP5036. Due to only two address pins, the TCA9548A shall be used to enlarge the address area. To make sure the bus is safe to use over a distance of a few meters, the P82B96 was suggested. Now I found the P82B715 Bus Extender. This one sounds interesting because of the ability of a multi drop configuration and the 12V voltage source that are not needed. In the datasheet I didn't find any safe declarations about the bus speed of the P82B715. I want to use the I2C fast mode with 400kHz. So do you think these three IC's may work together?

Thank you very much!

Regards

Claudius

  • Hi Claudius,

"So do you think these three IC's may work together?"

By these three, you mean LP5036, TCA9548A, and P82B715? If so, it is possible though it would be best to do a schematic of the I2C bus review once you think you have your system set up. Keep in mind, P82B715 would need to be used in a pair (at each end of the cable).

I do need to point out, P82B715 is an I2C cable extender but does not actually redrive the signal so any noise you see on the cable transmission will also be present on the onboard I2C bus. This can be a big draw back for some users. P82B96 does redrive the signal (does not require 12V Vcc) and can also be placed in a multi drop system if you connect with other P82B96s on the cable side (NOT the Sx/Sy side).

"To make sure the bus is safe to use over a distance of a few meters"

How many meters and what kind of cable (most common I see is CAT5)?

"In the datasheet I didn't find any safe declarations about the bus speed of the P82B715"

I would assume 400kHz but I would probably need to test this myself. I can see if I can locate some samples in my office to verify.

    Thanks,

    -Bobby
