TPS23861: passive power switching

Part Number: TPS23861

Hi,

We are implementing the TPS23861 design and the question of whether this quad port PSE can perform passive power sourcing came up.

We wanted to be able to switch on power to non 802.3axxx loads (meaning loads without PDs) as an option to our customers using passive 48V devices

  • Hi Ajayt,

If by passive PoE you mean the PSE does not do detection or class and simply powers up to 48V, the answer is yes. But the IC must be in manual and driven by a micro. The micro can then just do a power on command to the port and it will turn ON.

Passive cannot work when in auto mode since auto mode will follow the IEEE standard and require a compliant PD to be connect before powering up.

I recommend testing this out on the EVM using the EVM GUI. Thanks!

  • Many thanks

Would it be possible for you to share the page/section where this is detailed?

I will test it out on the EVM
