BQ77915: Can i use a zener and resistor to protect chg pin rather than a MOSFET?

Part Number: BQ77915

Hi sir, I have few questions here?

1. Can i use a zener and resistor to protect chg pin? , In the datasheet sections 10.1.1.2 and 10.1.1.3 shows different protections which is better? or any one is fine?

2. I have already manufactured a PCB without a chg pin protection MOSFET. Will this work?

3. If works any precautions to be taken for testing my prototype? ,

4. Please have a look at my schematic and let me know , if you find any errors

  • Hi,

Please see my answers to your questions below:

    1. Sure, you can use a Zener to protect your CHG pin. The level of protection will depend on the voltage of your pack and the use case. If you do not think you will have a large negative voltage on PACK-, these additional components are not necessary. Ultimately, the decision is up to you and how much protection you would like.
    2. Yes, this solution will work fine. Unless you have a voltage that violates the abs max on the PACK- pin (-30V)
    3. Monitor all of the pins to make sure no abs max is violated.
    4. I took a quick look at your schematic, and I did not see any errors at this time.
