hi there,

Below is my setup configuration, attached, I want Vin = 9 or 12 V wall wart (recommended) Vout ranges from 1.6 to 5.5 V with a 1K pot. 

is this correct?

    Hi,

    A typical Potentiometer has a constant total resistance across it with the wiper pin producing a reference voltage.  I believe you want to connect the potentiometer from VOUT to GND and connect the wiper pin to the adjust pin of the LM317.

    if so, what value pot do i want, to get the min/max Vout that i need?

    Yes, The wiper should sweep from 0Ohm to 1KOhm VOUT is 1.25V+VADJ. There are two factors to consider when choosing a potentiometer for this type of application:

    1. The resistance is low enough so that the ADJ pin current has a negligible impact. 1K might be OK for your application needs.

    2. The power rating of the potentiometer needs to be sized properly. If your voltage range is limited to 5.5V this should not be an issue with a 1k potentiometer.
